5 Interesting Uses for Orange Peels

“Waste not. Want not.”
Disclaimer

Every time I hear that quote, I’m reminded of Angelica Houston’s character on the movie Ever After. Though she was super crazy, the meaning behind what she said means a great deal. If we use the resources we have carefully, you will never be without. It all makes sense, yet we still waste stuff. I’m guilty of it.

It’s important that we use what we have to our advantage, and teach ourselves and our kids not to waste. Start repeating that 80’s kids song “Recycle, Reduce, Reuse”…get that stuck in your heads, and get on it. With all that said, I went to the store the other day, and bought a plethora of oranges – because my kids will scarf that stuff down. But of course, the peels are scattered throughout my house creating a mess of the color orange. I thought maybe I should just leave it all there to add some color to my already zestful maison, but it would be better getting other uses out of them.

Here are 5 uses I’ve found for orange peels:

Deodorize your garbage disposal

It doesn’t take much. Just stuff a few peels down your disposal and turn it on. Boom, clean!

Air freshener – Boil orange peels with cinnamon

This is a super easy, but effective way to freshen your home. Fill a saucepan about halfway with water and toss in a handful of orange peels. Combine with a tablespoon of cinnamon. Set on medium and allow the aroma to fill our house with a delicious smell.

Soften brown sugar

I’ve used bread, but never considered orange peels. And this actually works too. Just a few strips do the trick.

Natural cleaner

Grab one of those handy mason jars and fill it up with orange peels. Next, add vinegar, close the lid and put it somewhere to set for about 1-2 weeks. Afterwards, place the liquid in a spray bottle and use as an all purpose cleaner. Works like a charm!

Fire starter

This one never crossed my mind, but I tried it, and it works (so long as the wind isn’t blowing hard like it was when I tried it). Allow the peels to dry completely, and try not to get pith on them (pith makes it harder to allow the peels to catch on fire). Keep them in a container and take them with you on campouts this coming summer.
